Update [2008-6-17 3:10:25 by Todd Beeton]:My favorite part of Al Gore's amazing speech today (h/t Hotline's On Call):

On January 20th, 1961, as a 12-year-old boy, I stood in the snow on -- in front of the Capitol as John Fitzgerald Kennedy took the oath of office. I know what his inspiration meant to my generation and I feel that same spirit in this auditorium here tonight, building all over this country this year. I feel your determination after two terms of the Bush-Cheney administration to change the direction of our country. In looking back over the last eight years, I can tell you that we have already learned one important fact since the year 2000. Take it from me, elections matter.

If you think the next appointments to our Supreme Court are important, you know that elections matter. If you live in the city of New Orleans, you know that elections matter. If you or a member of your family are serving in the active military, the National Guard or reserve, you know that elections matter. If you're a wounded veteran, you know that elections matter. If you lost your job, if you're struggling with your mortgage, you know that elections matter. If you care about a clean environment, if you want a government that protects you instead of special interests, you know that elections matter. If you care about food safety, if you like a “T” on your B.L.T., you know that elections matter. If you bought poisoned, lead-filled toys from China or adulterated medicine made in China, if you bought tainted pet food made in China, you know that elections matter. After the last eight years, even our dogs and cats have learned that elections matter.

And this election matters more than ever because America needs change more than ever. After eight years of lost jobs and lower wages, we need change. After eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure, we need change. After eight years in which our Constitution has been dishonored and disrespected, we need change. After eight years of the worst, most serious foreign policy mistakes in the entire history of our nation, we need change.

Re: Congratulations (none / 0)

Though both hetero, the wife and I were really proud of our state Supreme court when they dismissed the challenge to postpone implementation of their ruling on the constitutionality of gay marriage until the next election cycle.

Essentially, they emphasized that the question of gay marriage had been decided by all due and correct legal proceeding and no postponement or waiting period could even be allowed under current state constitution. Until amendment to the state constitution or state referendum, there is no prohibition against the marriage of same sex couples.

Raising a toast to all the loving same-sex couples soon to be legally married. Hope to hell your divorce rate sets a better example for the holier-than-thou's with a divorce rate slightly over 50%.

We hope somebody can restore the good name of "marriage".  :-)

PSD has been in politics for decades and was HRC's chief of staff for most of that.  She is a great chief of staff.  She will continue to be a great chief of staff for the VP.

She was a horrible campaign manager.  That is very true.  that does not, however, mean she should never  be given a job in politics again.

I'm not even sure how Solis-Doyle was as a campaign manager in New York. I don't see why that should create bitter feelings after. She was fired because she couldn't do the extended job - I imagine she knows that.

I still think the Obama pick is for her to prepare the Veep slot for Hillary. Hillary has a big donor's meeting tomorrow - why would Obama piss on her 2 days before?

Hillary is no loser. Don't you ever call her that. Also, with primary campaigns, many times, the runner up becomes the VP, like in 1980, with Reagan and Bush, LBJ and JFK

Re: Why would you hire a loser? (none / 0)

You think LBJ was a runner up to the 1960 Democratic nomination?

---------------

TOTALS - Democratic Primary

Kennedy 1847259 (32.5%)
Brown 1354031 (23.8%)
McLain 646387 (11.4%)
Humphrey 590410 (10.4%)
Smathers 322235 (5.7%)
DiSalle 315312 (5.5%)
Unpledged Delegates 241958 (4.3%)
Morse 147262 (2.6%)
Stevenson 51665 (.9%)
Symington 29557 (.5%)
Nixon 15782 (.3%)
Johnson 15691 (.3%)
Others 109115 (1.9%)

Total 5686664

http://www.jfklibrary.org/Historical+Res ources/Archives/Reference+Desk/1960+Pres idential+Election+Primaries.htm

-----------------

To be honest, I'm not even sure he actively ran. I know Humphrey was the main threat to Kennedy until West Virginia. Anyway, as you can see, LBJ was far from the runner up.

Gore endorses Obama and promises to help him (none / 0)

By NEDRA PICKLER (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
June 16, 2008 8:24 PM EDT

"Obama focused on his plan to improve the economy while in Michigan, which has the nation's highest unemployment rate. He told a crowd in Flint, which had a seasonally unadjusted April unemployment rate of 9.3 percent, that they cannot fear globalization but must embrace it as a reality of the future."

Read some other Pickler stories. Like the one that asks if Obama is patriotic. This woman is a hack and GOP plant. The Associated Press used to have guidelines when it comes to the way they report stories. I guess we now have to rely on GOP translation of Democratic candidates.

Read the actual transcript and I suspect the answer is far different.

Barack Obama

"I am absolutely certain Connecticut is going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the U.S. Senate so he can continue to serve on our behalf," he said.

At around the same time:

Gore Refuses to Back Lieberman
Interviewed on Bloomberg TV, Al Gore refused to endorse his former vice presidential running mate, Sen. Joe Lieberman (C-CT), in his re-election race.

Prior to that, in 2003, Gore endorsed Dean over Lieberman, thus distancing himself from Lieberman politically. Even before that Gore gave a speech opposing the war in Sep'02 some 10 days before Obama's speech.
