On my way to get some food today, I decided to put on the ol' Limbaugh show. I had given up my habit of listening to the other side during the primary season because our infighting was so fascinating but today seemed like a good time to check out their views.

While I'm sure that you'll be shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that once again the Democrats managed to nominate the most leftist candidate in the history of the Democratic Party, much worse than the last guy Limbaugh claimed was like that, I was more interested in hearing what he said about McCain. In short, Limbaugh does not like McCain and hated his speech.

The Republicans have a problem right now. Their ideas have been tried and found wanting by the majority of the public, but the base still believes that they'd win elections if they just said them louder. McCain knows that he can't win an election if he's tied to Bush, but his slight movements away from that raised the wrath of Limbaugh. Halfway through his Obama rant, he just stopped and went after McCain. Remember that the Republicans have had two months of honeymoon period already and their base is still not on board.

This is why I'm not too worried about our split. The fact is that we were arguing largely over tactics. Both camps have the same basic goals. Sure there will be some people who just can't pull the lever for Obama, but that's nothing compared to the Republican base who outright hate John McCain.

I think Obama and McCain will largely split the moderates. Both have an appeal that way. Beyond that though, the vast majority of the Democratic base is fired up by Obama. The Republican base? Not so much. One day after the primary season, we're already more healed than the Republicans. Barring a disaster, I think we do win the turnout game and therefore win the election. Fingers crossed.

So you won't vote for Obama? And I can blame you if this war is still going on in 2016 and the recession gets deeper and the White House keeps conducting illegal wiretapping on our citizens? Just checking ... you keep nursing those hurt feelings, I'm more interested in fixing this country.

Wherever he decides to go to win additional votes, he angers a section of the party that is already deeply suspicious of him. He cannot be with Bush and he cannot distance himself from him, for example. It's very satisfying...

All the rancor in the D-party misses the main point:

The GOP is a pigsty.

This from a centrist Indie who watches both parties with an interest in potentially supporting them.

To repeat: The GOP is a slathering mess of acrimony and ennui.

The Dems will lose in Nov? Are you out of your minds? Sure, it's possible...

Oh boy.

I noticed the camera didn't pull back very far. I wonder if there were even a couple hundred people there. When, when, when the audience DID clap, it sounded like 50 or so people, at most.

He was embarrassing to the party. I can't possible see how this guy is going to inspire anyone to vote Republican. He was like paint drying.

FOX news was trying to explain why his speech was so poorly delivered. they said he is having trouble reading the teleprompter, and is out of practice talking. Karl Rove even said it was just terrible.

I watched it with total dismay and was more disappointed than ever I still cannot believe that he is our nominee. He reminded me a bit of Mr Rogers. I feel as tho we are living in a surreal world right now and now am listening to Hillary...does not look as tho she is giving up yet. So, maybe Operation Chaos is still going forward .

I just lurk there from time to time to gauge how the religious right is feeling.

BTW: The comments were split between those who said the speech was awful, those who called people who said that trolls, and those who said being a good public speaker was not important in a president. But the majority agreed that the speech was awful.

One pro-McCain bumper sticker I saw.... (none / 0)

...was very telling indeed. It said:

"F*ck it. McCain '08."

This was on a pro-gun website that makes the NRA look like the Brady Campaign.

So yeah, the GOP's base are going to pull the lever, but they're not exactly embracing McCain. The crank-the-base, appease-the-middle formula they've been using for decades isn't going to work. Their base is too wise to the BS.

We need to work our asses off. Particularly, we need to work our asses off now to get an early advantage while the opportunity is there. But if we do that, given everything else ... we're going to just absolutely destroy McCain.
